The Sânămăria Orlea commune is located in the center of the southern part of Hunedoara County, bordering the north with Hațeg and Bretea Română, to the east with Boşorod commune, to the south with the commune of Pui and Sălaşu de Sus, and to the west with the Toteşti and Râu de Mori commune.
Sânămăria Orlea, a commune residence, located in the heart of the Haţeg Country, is the first locality on the road that reaches the Valea Râului Mare to the Râu de Mori and to the Retezat Mountains.

Access
The administrative territory of the commune is crossed by:
DN 66 connecting the municipalities of Deva and Petroșani.
DN 668 connects the River Mori, Orlea Sântămăria, Bretea Română, Strei Sângeorgiu, Dancu Mare.
DC 68, DC 90 and DC93 connect the component villages
Sânămăria Orlea commune has direct access to the electrified double railway Simeria-Petroșani. The railway station is at Subcetate.

History and features
To the south of the town of Hațeg, on the right bank of the River Mare, lies the village of Sântămăria-Orlea, documented in 1331, under the name "Villa Sancte Marie". On a small plateau on the outskirts of the village, a short distance from the old castle of the Kendeffy noble family, stands a magnificent place of worship, now the home to the reformed worship.
Fauna, vegetation, climate
Vegetation
In the area of ​​Sântămăria Orlea dominates the deciduous forests.
The most common wood species: oak, hornbeam, ash, jug, maple.
On smaller areas: the pine.
In meadows and shrubs: the willow, the anus and less the poplar
On the slopes of the hills with southern exhibition there are orchards of fruit trees made of different varieties of apple, hairs, plum, cherry, cherry and very rarely walnut.
Herbaceous flora: fescue, big grass, squid, violins, eagles, clover, dandelion.
On the meadows grow different species of grasses and legumes. In cereal crops, weeds appear like moss, shrimp, field mustard, tart, netisor, loboda.
The cultivated plants are: wheat, corn, barley, rye, potato, sunflower, sugar beet.

Fauna
The most widespread wild animals are: wolf, boar, deer, fox, squirrel, rabbit, ferret, small rodents, field mouse, mite, hedgehog.
Domestic animals: cattle, sheep, pigs, baboons and less common are horses and rabbits.

Climate and hydrographic network
On the territory of the commune flow 3 more and more rivers, especially in the hilly area whose flows increase significantly during the rainy season.
Main rivers: the Râu Mare, Streiul and Sibişelul.
The river courses are regulated by Hydro Power System, which has caused the accumulation of three lakes in the commune's territory:
Partial Unciuc Lake, Acreage Lake Orlea and Bucium Lake Bucium.
The climate generally meets the features of the four-seasons mountain range. It has temperate-continental character with specific submontane. The differences between the cold and hot season average temperatures are moderate. The precipitation regime is quite rich, being characteristic of the foothills at the foot of the mountains. The dominant winds are determined by the geographical position of the commune, predominantly from the west.
